Review: United Airlines 777-200 First Class

When it comes to flying long-haul, comfort and service can make or break the journey. Recently, I had the opportunity to fly United Airlines 777-200 First Class, and I was eager to see how it measured up to expectations. Here’s a detailed breakdown of my experience—from booking to landing.

Review: United Airlines 777-200 First Class

Booking the Flight

I booked my ticket through United’s website, taking advantage of a mileage redemption offer. The booking process was seamless, and I was able to select my preferred seat during checkout (more on that later). One downside: there was an extra charge for selecting specific seats in First Class, which I feel should be included in the premium ticket price.

Airport Check-In and Lounge Experience

Arriving at the airport, check-in was a breeze. United’s First-Class check-in counter had no line, and I was greeted by a friendly agent who quickly processed my luggage and handed me my boarding pass.

Next, I headed to the United Polaris Lounge, which is exclusively for First and Business Class passengers. The lounge was a highlight of my trip. With a luxurious ambiance, a variety of seating options, and plenty of natural light, it offered a perfect escape from the airport chaos. I enjoyed a delicious meal from the à la carte menu—salmon with a side of couscous—and sipped on a glass of champagne before heading to the gate.

Boarding the 777-200

Boarding was orderly and efficient, with First Class passengers given priority. Stepping into the cabin, I was greeted by a sleek and modern interior. The First-Class cabin on United’s 777-200 features a 1-2-1 configuration, ensuring every seat has direct aisle access—a significant improvement over older layouts.

I had chosen a window seat, 1A, for privacy and the opportunity to enjoy the view. The seat itself was spacious and well-cushioned, with a lie-flat feature that promised a comfortable sleep. A large pillow, soft blanket, and an amenity kit by Sunday Riley awaited me, adding a touch of luxury.

In-Flight Comfort and Amenities

As we settled in, the flight attendants came around to introduce themselves and offer pre-departure drinks. I opted for a mimosa, which was served promptly. The cabin crew’s warm and attentive service set a positive tone for the journey.

The seat was comfortable, with adjustable settings to customize the position. The lie-flat feature was excellent, making it easy to stretch out during the 12-hour flight. The storage space was adequate, with compartments for small items and a dedicated spot for my shoes.

The entertainment system featured a large, high-resolution screen loaded with movies, TV shows, and music. Noise-canceling headphones were provided, and they worked well to block out ambient noise. Wi-Fi was available for purchase, though it was slightly pricey for a First-Class ticket.

Dining Experience

The meal service was a highlight of the flight. Shortly after takeoff, the crew distributed menus and took orders. For my main course, I chose the beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. The presentation was elegant, and the flavors exceeded my expectations.

The dessert cart was a treat, offering options like cheesecake, ice cream, and a selection of fruit. I went with the cheesecake, paired with a glass of port wine—an indulgent ending to a satisfying meal.

Throughout the flight, the crew was attentive, ensuring my water glass was always full and offering snacks between meals.

Sleeping and Relaxation

When it was time to sleep, the lie-flat seat truly shone. The cabin was dimly lit, and the noise level was minimal, allowing for a restful nap. The blanket and pillow were cozy, and I appreciated the privacy of the window seat. While I wouldn’t compare it to a hotel bed, it was one of the better in-flight sleeping experiences I’ve had.

Landing and Arrival

As we approached our destination, the crew served a light breakfast consisting of a croissant, fresh fruit, and coffee. It was a simple but refreshing way to start the day.

Landing was smooth, and thanks to the priority disembarkation, I was among the first to leave the plane. My luggage was already waiting at the carousel—a small but appreciated touch that made the experience feel seamless.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Spacious and comfortable lie-flat seats with direct aisle access
  • Excellent food and beverage options
  • Attentive and professional crew
  • Access to the luxurious Polaris Lounge

Cons:

  • Extra charges for seat selection in First Class
  • Expensive in-flight Wi-Fi
  • Limited storage space compared to some competitors

Final Thoughts

My flight on United Airlines 777-200 First Class was an enjoyable experience. While it may not rival the ultra-luxurious First-Class offerings of airlines like Emirates or Singapore Airlines, it provides a solid and comfortable option for long-haul travel.

The highlights were the attentive crew, delicious meals, and the Polaris Lounge experience. However, the extra charges for seat selection and the high cost of Wi-Fi were minor drawbacks.

Would I fly United’s 777-200 First Class again?

Absolutely, especially if I find a good deal or mileage redemption opportunity. It’s a fantastic way to travel in comfort and style without breaking the bank. If you’re considering First Class on United, I’d say it’s worth it for the added comfort and service, especially on longer flights.
